Bill of materials (BOM): recipe per finished product

A bill of materials lists each component product and quantity required to make one unit of a parent (finished) product. Define multiple component lines per parent—raw materials, packaging, sub-assemblies—and search or filter BOMs by finished item.

Rules enforced at save time keep data clean: a component cannot be the same product as its parent, and duplicate component lines for one parent are blocked. BOMs are the blueprint production orders use when posting inventory movements—no parallel “production spreadsheet” with different quantities.

1. Every BOM component line is checked for sufficient stock in the production warehouse.
2. Components are issued (stock out) with production-type movements.
3. Finished goods are received (stock in) into the order warehouse.

If no BOM exists for the finished product, production cannot post—forcing master-data discipline before shop floor runs. If components are short, the error names the product and required vs available quantity so buyers can replenish before retrying.

Production in the wider supply chain

Production sits between purchasing and sales:

• Raw material arrives via GRNs from suppliers.
• Production orders convert raw stock into finished SKUs in a warehouse.
• Sales invoices and GINs issue finished goods to customers.

Every production sync writes stock movements typed as production—separate rows for component consumption and finished-goods receipt, each referencing the production order. Filter the stock movement ledger by type “production” to answer “what did job #1042 consume last Tuesday?” without opening shop-floor notes.

1. Define raw material and finished products in the catalog; enable inventory tracking.

3. Set opening balances or GRN in raw material before first production run.
